First TMA Away

I have finished and submitted my first TMA.  I hope it’s ok.
I’m feeling fairly confident about most of it but I don’t want to predict the score.
Fingers crossed.

In my last update I posted the wrong video.  Here is the correct one.
It’s the first part of a 6 part (I think) series of ads from the eighties.
Well worth watching.

Get well soon Dad.

Just had word that dad is in hospital for checks and tests.  The doctors aren’t worried which is some comfort but I’ll feel better once he’s been given the all clear.

 

Another Birthday

It was my wife’s birthday on Saturday.

I can’t tell you how many years of course (I like being able to breath without a machine).

Binary :S

Recently in my studies, I’ve had to deal with binary numbers.  This is a base 2 system and comprehension of this had proved ever illusive.  Recently though I vanquished this little problem.  Even to the point where I can do simple addition.

For example

  10110 - 22
+ 11101 - 29
  -----
 110011 - 51

The numbers to the right are the decimal equivalent.

It’s actually easer than decimal once you get your head round it.

Also Happy 100th birthday to my Nan who celebrated this auspicious occasion last weekend.  I even got to see the famous ‘telegram’ from the queen.  These days of course it’s a card with a picture of her majesty.  She could have smiled though

Apple v Nokia

I do like it when giants clash.  Nokia versus Apple in a patent row.  Click here for more info

Nokia, the world’s biggest mobile phone maker, has said that it is suing its US rival Apple for infringing patents on mobile phone technology for the iPhone.

Nokia said it had not been compensated for its technology, and accused Apple of “trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation”.

Should be interesting to see how big the eventual payout will be.

Titan Quest + Exp Pack

In between studying we relax playing Titan Quest.  It’s an action RPG much like Diablo but with better visuals.  It’s good fun.

The tutorial was better than I thought it would be.

A small class of around 10 turned up.  We were split into three groups with the first hour devoted to studying the OU way.  The last dealt with the main ideas behind the first unit.  In otherwords a catch-up session.  This is what tutorials seem to be about.  Not sure if I’ll go to the next one though.

I’m Stuck

For the first time I’m stuck on the degree.  I’ve emailed the tutor so I hope to get some response back soon.

Devising a representation involves two assumptions.
1. The relationship between form and content is not predetermined.

2. People can choose which form to associate with which content.

A representation in this case is a means of communicating something to someone or people.

I’m enjoying the challenge and also the buzz of (finally) understanding something.

First Tutorial

My first tutorial is soon.  Not sure what to expect but we’ve been told to take unit 1 and 2 as well as pens and paper.  It’s not what I would usually chose to do but I’ll give it a try. I’ll post about it when I get back

Sunday is my day off from studying so Tak and I planted daffodils in the garden (thanks mum).

I’ve added two more links: UT Unlimited is my other site and the other is Oddee.com.  This has some great lists of strange and bizarre stuff.  Well worth a look.
